Security Tools

Check that a site's HTTPS certificate is valid and not about to expire, create strong passwords, see how a password would hold up against guessing, and generate hashes.

What happens to what you enter

  • Password Generator and Hash Generator run entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
  • Password Strength Checker scores the password in your browser. For the breach check it sends only the first five characters of the password's SHA-1 hash to the Have I Been Pwned Pwned Passwords service, which returns all matching hashes for your browser to compare. The password itself never leaves the page.
  • SSL Certificate Checker needs a server: PagesTest connects to the host on port 443 and reads the certificate it presents.

Hashing is not encryption

A hash is a one-way fingerprint of data: you can't turn it back into the original. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checksums but are broken for security uses such as signatures. Passwords should never be stored as a plain MD5 or SHA hash; use a slow password-hashing function such as Argon2, bcrypt or scrypt.
