This random password generator creates passwords from the character sets you choose, between 6 and 50 characters long. Passwords are generated in your browser with crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, and are never sent to PagesTest or stored.

How to generate a strong password

  1. Set the length with the slider or number box. Use at least 16 characters for important accounts.
  2. Choose the character sets: uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols. More sets mean more possible characters per position.
  3. Optionally exclude look-alike characters (0 O o i I l L 1) if the password will be read or typed by hand, or exclude repeated characters.
  4. Copy the password, or click regenerate for a new one. Store it in a password manager rather than reusing it.

How long should a password be?

Strength comes mostly from length. Each extra random character multiplies the number of possible passwords by the size of the character set. Approximate strength of passwords from this generator with all four main sets enabled (about 70 possible characters):

LengthApproximate entropyGood for
8~49 bitsNot recommended for anything important
12~74 bitsLow-value accounts
16~98 bitsEmail, banking and other important accounts
20+~123 bits or morePassword manager master passwords, admin and server accounts

Excluding look-alike or repeated characters shrinks the set slightly, so add a character or two to compensate.

Password good practice

  • Use a different password for every account. Reused passwords let one breach unlock many accounts.
  • Use a password manager to store generated passwords, so you only have to remember one strong master password.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication wherever it's offered; it protects you even if a password leaks.
  • Check existing passwords with the Password Strength Checker, which also checks them against known breaches.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to use an online password generator?

This one generates passwords entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto random number generator, and nothing is sent over the network. As with any tool, generate the password on a device you trust.

Are symbols necessary in a password?

They help, but length helps more. A 20-character password of letters and numbers is stronger than a 10-character one with symbols. Some sites restrict which symbols they accept; if a password is rejected, switch symbols off and add length.

Should I use a passphrase instead?

A passphrase of several randomly chosen words is easier to remember and type, and with five or more random words it is strong. For passwords stored in a password manager, a long random string like the ones generated here is simplest.

How can I make a strong password I can remember?

Let a password manager remember most passwords for you, and use a long passphrase for the manager itself. Avoid personal information and simple substitutions such as P@ssw0rd, which attackers try early.
